Surgical Technology, AAS


Surgical technologists are allied health professionals, who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. Surgical technologists work under the supervision and delegatory authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists are experts in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique to combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation and tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. 

Entrance Requirements

  • All applicants must be 18 years of age.
  • Student must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Candidate must be admitted as a CEI matriculated student one month prior to the professional application deadline. The professional application deadline is April 1st.
  • For transfer credit, you must request official transcripts/documents to be sent directly from the college for all colleges where prerequisite coursework has been completed.

Surgical Technology is a competitive entry program and applicants go through a selection process. Submission of a Surgical Technology professional application does not guarantee acceptance into the program. There is no waiting list for this program. Applicants must reapply each year.

The Surgical Technology professional application deadline is April 1st. All forms and links are located on the CEI Surgical Technology webpage. Incomplete application submissions will not be considered.

  • All Surgical Technology students must maintain a C+ (77%) or higher in all Surgical Technology courses in order to progress in the program.
  • One cohort of 16 students is admitted each year.
  • The curriculum and course requirements may be academically rigorous.
  • Accepted students are required to attend mandatory orientation.

  • Understand the need to be life-long learners

Program Costs

In addition to the registration fees, a Surgical Technology (SRT) student can expect to spend approximately $2,500 on books, supplies, testing, and miscellaneous costs while completing the SRT Associate of Applied Science Degree. Graduates are required to sit for the national certification exam at the conclusion of the program. Information regarding costs and dates for the exams will be available from the program instructor(s).

Accreditation and Certification

Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) under the direction of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC-STSA). The Surgical Technology Program awards all graduating students an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree, rendering them eligible to sit for the Surgical Technologist National Certification Exam (NBSTSA)) which is given as the exit exam. This purpose is to determine through examination if an individual has acquired both theoretical and practical knowledge of surgical technology. Upon passing the examination the individual earns the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential.

Program Continuation Requirements

All professional component specific courses must be passed with a minimum of C+ (77%), and must be passed consecutively before continuing on to the next courses.
