Medical Assisting, ITC

The Medical Assistant (MA) program prepares graduates to assist physicians in outpatient settings and performing administrative and/or clinical tasks. Medical Assistants are multi-skilled, allied health workers who demonstrate multidisciplinary skills while behaving in a professional and ethical manner.

Entrance Requirements

New CEI Students:

  • Complete a CEI admission application:
    • Submit required admission documents.
    • Complete placement scores if applicable.
  • All Medical Assisting applicants are encouraged to meet with an admissions counselor. 

Current CEI Students:

  • Meet with an admissions counselor for guidance and application process. 

Professional Program Entrance Requirements

  • Medical Assisting program applications and documentation are due July 1st.
  • Complete Medical Assistant Professional Program Application and submit required documentation by deadline.
  • The MA program has a limited number of spaces based on the number of available externship sites. This program is filled based on a first come first serve basis. 
  • Documentation required with your application includes:

Post Acceptance Documentation Requirements - Due August 1st:

  • TB Test
    • QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus test
    • Chest x-ray (ONLY for previous positive TB results)
    • Test must be dated after January 1st of application year
  • Proof of Health Insurance coverage
  • BLS CPR & First Aid Certification
    • Must be one of the following 2 options:
      • American Heart Association BLS provider and First Aid
      • American Red Cross BLS provider and First Aid
  • Flu Shot - Due in October

Additional Information

  • All core and program specific courses must be passed with a minimum of 73% (C), or higher and must be passed consecutively before continuing on to the next courses.
  • Credit for prior experiential earning will not be granted.
  • One cohort of 16 students is admitted each year.
  • The curriculum and course requirements may be academically rigorous.
  • Accepted students are required to attend mandatory orientation.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the importance of maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the Medical Assisting field, at all times and in all situations.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal, nonverbal, written and technological communication, in a professional healthcare setting
  • Practice within the ethical and legal codes of the Medical Assisting field.
  • Demonstrate an entry level ability to problem solve, organize, prioritize, and make clinical or administrative judgments in a variety of healthcare settings while working as a member of the health care team.
  • Acknowledge the need for continuing education for personal and professional development and reflect the changing nature of healthcare.

College of Eastern Idaho’s Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon recommendation of the Medical Assisting Educators Review Board (MAERB).

All graduating students of the Intermediate Technical Certificate (ITC) program are eligible and required to sit for the AAMA Certification Examination. Upon passing the examination, the individual earns the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential.

Program Costs

In addition to the registration fees, students can expect to spend approximately $2,000 on books, supplies, and miscellaneous fees. Graduates are required to sit for national proficiency exams at the conclusion of their program. Information regarding costs and dates for the exams will be available from the program instructor(s).

Course Competencies, Learning Outcomes, & Objectives

To prepare medical assistants who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession. Students are required to complete 100% of these psychomotor and affective competencies with a passing grade no lower than B (83%). All core and program specific courses must be passed with a minimum of 73% (C), or higher and must be passed consecutively before continuing on to the next courses.
