Dropping/Withdrawing from a Single Course or Courses
Students dropping before and during the first week of the term:
Courses dropped before the beginning of the semester and during the first week will not appear on the student’s official transcript. Students dropping from one or more course(s) (but not all) before the semester and first week of the term, may do so through Self-Service.
Withdrawing from a course or courses after the first week of the term:
The deadline to withdraw from one or more course(s) without grade penalty is the last day of the tenth week of the fall/spring semesters, and the last day of the fifth week of block A, block B, and summer term. Students must use Self-Service to withdraw from their course(s) by the close of business on the final day of the withdrawal deadline. These deadlines are published on the CEI website, calendar, and in the college catalog. A grade of “W” will appear on the official transcript for each course the student withdrew from after the first week and prior to the published deadline.
- Students who fail to complete the official drop process will be considered enrolled and will be graded accordingly
- A “W” grade can have a number of negative consequences, including negatively impacting eligibility for Federal Financial Aid. A “W” on a transcript can also raise questions by transfer institutions and even prospective employers
- Students should meet with academic and financial aid advisors to carefully consider all consequences before withdrawing from courses
- A student who has received financial aid and who plans on withdrawing from any course(s) will be responsible for the funds that must be returned based on the date of withdrawal
- Students registered for an 8-week or module course should speak with an advisor prior to withdrawal
- Deadlines are published on the academic calendar
10th Day Attendance
After tenth day attendance is reported by faculty, the Registrar’s Office will email students via CEI email requesting a response indicating if the student wishes to remain enrolled or dropped from their course(s). Students who do not reply to the deadline indicated in the email will be dropped from all courses. Those who wish to be reinstated, will be required to submit a petition to the Registrar’s Office and pay a $50 non-refundable re-registration fee. Be advised there is no guarantee instructors will allow the student to be re-enrolled in the course(s).
Total Withdrawal
To initiate a withdrawal or drop from any, but not all, classes, contact the Advising Office by the designated deadlines outlined on the Academic Calendar.
All students who wish to leave the institution (all classes) during a semester must formally withdraw by completing a Total Withdrawal form. A formal withdrawal is when students provide official notification to the Registrar’s Office of their intent to withdraw.
All students who wish to cease attendance in a course or not start attendance in a course must formally withdrawal (W grade) or drop (no transcription) the course respectively, by the institutions prescribed deadlines.
The deadline for a total withdrawal from CEI without grade penalty is the last day of the tenth week for the 16-week class(es) of the fall and spring semesters, and the last day of the fifth week of block A, block B, and summer term. The Total Withdrawal form is available online and must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office before the end of the last day to withdraw to receive a “W” grade. These deadlines are published on the CEI website, calendar, and in the college catalog. Students who have withdrawn from all courses after the add/drop deadline will not be allowed to re-register for courses within that term. A grade of (W) will be entered on the official transcript for each course if dropped prior to the published withdrawal deadline. Students who fail to complete the official withdrawal process will be considered enrolled and will be graded accordingly.
To deviate from institutional policy, a petition is required if requesting to withdraw without grade penalty after the published deadline. A petition will only be authorized in cases of documented circumstances of hardship, medical issues (documentation is required from the health care provider), or training related to employment.
Students are responsible for payment of their course(s) whether or not they attend.
