Phlebotomy, BTC

This phlebotomy program is designed to provide studentswith the knowledge and skills required to draw blood safely and effectively from patients for diagnostic purposes. The program includes both classroom instruction and hands-on training in a mock clinical setting before transitioning to a clinical experience. Topics covered include anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, medical terminology related to phlebotomy, infection control, and safety procedures, patient identification and communication skills, types of blood collection equipment and their uses, venipuncture techniques, capillary puncture techniques, special considerations for pediatric and geriatric patients, handling and processing of blood specimens, and quality control and assurance in phlebotomy. Courses in ethics, computer literacy, human biology, and medical terminology will increase students’ professionalism helping them incorporate with medical offices. Course material will be delivered through class lectures, labs, online assignments, and clinical experience with industry partners.

Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Basic Technical Certificate (BTC) from CEI and become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) through the National Healthcare Association (NHA). 

Entrance Requirements

  • Student must be 18 years of age at the start of classes.
  • Student must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

Application Process

The Phlebotomy program is a direct entry program. Candidates for admission are selected based on available space. Meeting the minimum criteria for admission does not guarantee admission into the program. Applications will be reviewed after all CEI admission requirements are met and Phlebotomy Enrollment form is received.  

New and Current CEI students complete the following enrollment steps: 

  • Meet with an admissions counselor for guidance and application process 
  • Complete a CEI admission application  
    • Submit required admission documentation (If applicable) 
    • Complete placement scores (If applicable)  
  • Complete and submit the Phlebotomy Enrollment Form in the supplemental section of the CEI application.  

Enrollment Deadline

The deadline to complete the CEI enrollment process and submit the Phlebotomy Enrollment form is August 1st.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the guide before applying. Please note that required docuentation is subject to change. 

Program Costs

In addition to tuition fees, students can expect to spend approximately $750 on books, supplies and miscellaneous fees. 

This program is not currently eligible for federal financial aid. Eligibility is under review and subject to change. Contact the Financial Aid office for program eligibility updates. 

Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, including use of computers, effective communication and use of specialized terminology, in the healthcare setting.
  • Explain the ethical and legal codes governing phlebotomy
  • Safely and efficiently collect, handle, and transport blood as part of a healthcare team.
  • Explain the importance of safe phlebotomy practices to patients’ overall health. 

Program Requirements

All classes must be passed with a minimum 77% (C+) or higher.
