The Medical Assistant (MA) program prepares graduates to assist physicians in outpatient settings and performing administrative and/or clinical tasks. Medical Assistants are multi-skilled, allied health workers who demonstrate multidisciplinary skills while behaving in a professional and ethical manner.
Enrollment Process
The Medical Assisting program is a direct entry program. Candidates for admission are selected based on available space. Meeting the minimum criteria for admission does not guarantee admission into the program. Applications will be reviewed after all CEI admission requirements are met and Medical Assisting Enrollment form is received.
New and Current CEI students complete the following enrollment steps:
- Meet with an admissions counselor for guidance and application process
- Complete a CEI admission application
- Submit required admission documentation (If applicable)
- Complete placement scores (If applicable)
- Complete and submit the Medical Assisting Enrollment Form in the supplemental section of the CEI application.

Enrollment Deadline
The deadline to complete the CEI enrollment process and submit Medical Assisting Enrollment form is July 1st.

Additional Information
- All core and program specific courses must be passed with a minimum of 77% (C+), or higher and must be passed consecutively before continuing on to the next courses.
- Credit for prior experiential learning will not be granted.
- One cohort of 16 students is admitted each year.
- The curriculum and course requirements may be academically rigorous.
- Accepted students are required to attend mandatory orientation.

- Demonstrate effective verbal, nonverbal, written and technological communication, in a professional healthcare setting.

- Demonstrate an entry level ability to problem solve, organize, prioritize, and make clinical or administrative judgments in a variety of healthcare settings while working as a member of the health care team.
- Acknowledge the need for continuing education for personal and professional development and reflect the changing nature of healthcare.
Accreditation
College of Eastern Idaho’s Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon recommendation of the Medical Assisting Educators Review Board (MAERB).

All graduating students of the Intermediate Technical Certificate (ITC) program are eligible and required to sit for the AAMA Certification Examination. Upon passing the examination, the individual earns the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential.
Program Costs
In addition to the registration fees, students can expect to spend approximately $2,000 on books, supplies, and miscellaneous fees. Graduates are required to sit for national proficiency exams at the conclusion of their program. Information regarding costs and dates for the exams will be available from the program instructor(s).
Program Requirements
Graduates of the Medical Assisting Program are expected to be competent in cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Students are required to complete all psychomotor and affective competency checks with a passing grade no lower than B (83%). All core and program specific courses must be passed with a minimum of 77% (C+), or higher and must be passed consecutively before continuing on to the next courses.
